Who is Virgin Holidays?

Arranging holidays for nearly 40 years, Virgin Holidays is best known for its long-haul trips to the USA and the Caribbean, but also offers package deals to a whole host of other short- and long-haul destinations, including Dubai, Mexico, Botswana, South Africa and Singapore. Travellers can book online, over the phone and in the company’s high-street stores.

Which? verdict

Virgin Holidays is worth considering for family holidays, where it was rated highly, but you may want to compare with Which? Recommended Provider Trailfinders before you book. For escorted and self-guided tour holidays, there are better alternatives.

What's Virgin Holidays like?

Virgin Holidays customers were impressed with its ‘excellent’ accommodation. For beach/resort holidays and family holidays, it received a terrific four-star accommodation rating and a perfect five stars for its all-inclusive rooms. Holidaymakers praised the ‘idyllic’ locations, with one saying they were satisfied by the ‘large choice of accommodation’ when booking.

Crucially, it also scored four stars for description meeting reality in the beach/resort holidays, city break, all-inclusive and family holiday categories. We were told by one reader that the ‘holiday was exactly what we booked’.

It wasn’t all good, though: a 74% customer score left Virgin near the bottom of our city breaks table, where it also received a disappointing two-star rating for value for money.

Virgin’s family holidays ranked fifth in our table of 20 providers. One customer told us their holiday was ‘a perfect fit for my family’, while another said their family was given ‘a wonderful experience’.

It is not a WRP this year, because it reserves the right to add a surcharge after you have booked and paid for your holiday. It can do this if some of its own costs rise, although Virgin tells us that it’s extremely rare for surcharges to be applied.

Should I book a holiday with Virgin Holidays?

Virgin Holidays is a decent provider that offers highly rated family holidays, but it is not a WRP as it doesn’t guarantee not to add surcharges. Which? Recommended Provider Trailfinders achieved a better customer score and has offered a price guarantee.
