Is Santander good if you have a medical condition?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to declare this to have it covered, which may result in a higher premium.

Santander works with a medical screening company called Verisk to ask customers about their medical conditions.

Santander isn't a specialist provider for customers with pre-existing medical conditions, but this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be able to cover your medical condition at a reasonable price.

However, if you're struggling to obtain cover, check our guide on travel insurance if you have a medical condition.

How good is Santander at handling claims?

The latest data from the Financial Conduct Authority, reflecting the year 2023, shows that Chubb European Group SE (Santander's underwriter) paid 85-90% of claims made on annual European policies. This was better than the industry average of 82.20%.

The company accepted 80-85% of claims made on annual worldwide policies, which is higher than the market average of 78.90%.

And for single-trip policies, it paid 85-90% of claims, again better than the average of 80.40%.

Santander travel insurance: how can I claim?

For medical emergencies abroad, call +44 (0)20 7173 7177.

To make other types of claim, call 0800 519 9925 from the UK. If overseas, call +44 (0)1293 726 329.

Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before claiming with them – for example, checking with the travel provider if you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let them know if there's a chance you will need to claim.

You'll need to provide your policy number when you call.
