'What you need to know about the Co-op's policies'

Dean Sobers, Which? travel insurance expert, says:

I've been analysing the Co-op's range of policies for years.

If you're a Which? member you can log in (or if not, sign up) to read my explanation of their strengths and weaknesses.

Is Co-op Insurance good if you have a medical condition?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, the Co-op may cover this on your travel insurance, but you'll need to declare it when you buy the policy.

The Co-op works with a medical screening company called Verisk to ask customers about their medical conditions.

It isn't a specialist provider for customers with pre-existing medical conditions, but this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be able to cover your medical condition at a reasonable price.

However, if you are struggling to obtain cover, check our guide on travel insurance if you have a medical condition.

How good is Co-op Insurance at handling claims?

Co-op uses a company called World Travel Protection to handle medical claims and Gallagher Bassett to handle all other claims.

  • The latest published data from the Financial Conduct Authority shows that in 2024, AllClear (which provides Co-op Insurance) paid 90-95% of claims made on annual worldwide and annual European policies, and 90-95% of claims made on Annual European policies. This is higher than the market average of 86.30%
  • It paid 85-90% of claims on worldwide policies, above the average of 84.50%
  • It accepted 85-90% of claims on single trip policies, higher than the average of 80%

Co-op Insurance travel insurance: how can I claim?

For medical emergencies abroad, call +44 (0)203 467 4125.

For other claims, call 0800 011 3721. You can also claim online.

Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before claiming with them – for example, checking with the travel provider if you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let them know if there's a chance you will need to claim.
