What’s Booking.com/Rentalcars.com like?

Booking.com sits in the middle of our table of car hire brokers, with a raft of average three-star ratings.

Its customer service is hit and miss, meaning it can’t be relied upon if a problem arises. One customer told us: ‘Our car was not available. In fact, the hire company was shut and could not be contacted. It totally ruined our holiday as no other cars were available from any other company. Booking.com did very little to help.'

Another told us they faced a very hard sell at the rental desk but when they complained, Booking.com said ‘it wasn’t their problem’.

Booking.com is transparent about the fact that ‘commission paid on bookings and other factors may affect the product rankings’, but we prefer brokers to order their results according to price or customer ratings.

Should I book with Booking.com or Rentalcars.com?

It offers a decent service as long as nothing goes wrong. Those customers who encountered a problem were not impressed with the customer service they received. There are better brokers available, such as Zest Car Rental.
