‘Saga's Plus policy was a standout on paper, but isn't a Best Buy’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

Saga's premium Plus policy ranked first for buildings cover and was in the top 10 for contents cover, with scores of 79% and 76%, respectively.

Although we were impressed by its policies, Saga’s complaints record meant we couldn’t make it a Best Buy.

The policy's highlights include uncapped trace and access cover (within the policy's overall sum insured limit). This pays for work to uncover the cause of a problem (such as a leak) in or under your home. The policy also covers cash and credit cards lost or stolen from your home up to £1,000.

We also liked that its contents cover extends to carers’ belongings as well as the policyholder’s, but it only offers £250 (per carer) for this. It also won’t cover damage caused by domestic pets, which a few policies we looked at will.

Fixed-price promise

Saga's Plus policy includes its signature two-year fixed-price promise. As the name suggests, it means Saga won’t raise your price for two years, provided:

  • You’ve not made changes to your policy
  • You’ve not claimed on the accidental damage, accidental loss or personal belongings sections of your cover
  • The rate of Insurance Premium Tax hasn’t changed
  • The VAT rate for the Annual Boiler Service hasn't changed.

You aren't bound to stay with Saga during that period if you find a better price in the interim. However, this goes both ways. Its T&Cs say that in certain circumstances during this period, if your risk significantly changes from the perspective of its underwriters, it won’t necessarily renew your cover.

Saga Select

Its standard Saga Select policy offers less comprehensive cover, but is more flexible, featuring optional add-ons such as personal belongings and accidental damage cover, which are included as standard in the Plus policy. It also comes without the fixed-price promise.

Saga Select ranked in the top five buildings policies – scoring 77% – but its contents cover was less impressive. It scored 66% (close to the average of 67%).

How good is Saga at handling claims?

Saga's underwriter, Ageas Insurance Limited, accepted 65% to 70% of claims on buildings-only policies – slightly above the industry average of 63%. Some 15% to 20% of claimants on these policies lodged a complaint, which was just above average (13%).

Meanwhile, the underwriter accepted 80% to 85% of claims on contents-only policies – a good bit above the average of 71%. Some 5% to 10% of claimants complained, which is in line with the 7% average.

When it came to claims on combined policies, the underwriter accepted 75% to 80% of claims – above the 71% average. Some 10% to 15% of claimants complained, which is also in line with the 12% industry average.

How can you save money on Saga home insurance?

Saga's prices vary depending on whether you buy policies online, by phone or via a comparison website. It's worth checking all three to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Saga's premium Plus policy is only available directly from Saga. Its Select policy can be found on the following price comparison websites:

  • Compare the Market
  • Confused.com
  • GoCompare
  • MoneySuperMarket.

You may be able to get a discount if you buy buildings and contents insurance together.

Want to pay monthly? Saga charges 19.9% APR, so you may be better off paying annually on an interest-free credit card.

The above information is correct as of August 2026. For more ways to save money when buying insurance, see our guide.

  • Visit Saga directly to find out more about its home insurance policy.

How does Saga compare with other providers?

While we did not have enough customer feedback to calculate a claims or customer satisfaction score for Saga, its standard Saga Select buildings policy scored 77% and ranks first in our standard buildings cover table. This puts it slightly ahead of standard cover from Aviva and NFU Mutual (which both scored 75%).

When it came to contents insurance, its standard Saga Select policy scored 66%, sitting in joint-18th place among standard policies. Its 66% policy score matches the standard contents policy from More Than.
