‘Lloyds Bank's policies earned solid scores’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

The Gold policy from Lloyds Bank was in the top fifth of policies we looked at – both for buildings and contents cover. It scored 75% for the former and 74% for the latter.

Although it had impressive scores, we didn't name it a Best Buy due to its underwriter’s low claims acceptance rate.

The policy offers £100,000 cover for alternative accommodation in the event that your home becomes uninhabitable and you need to stay elsewhere while repairs are made. It also picked up points for providing full accidental damage cover as standard, which is a relative rarity with home insurance policies.

It does have some drawbacks, though. These include a comparatively high excess of £500 for escape of water, and what is meant by ‘flood’ isn't defined in its policy wording.

Build Back Better

Lloyds is a member of Flood Re, which helps insurers cover customers in areas of high flood risk. It’s also part of Flood Re’s ‘Build Back Better scheme’. This means that if you’re a customer in an area with a high flood risk and make a flood claim, you’ll be financially supported in making enhancements to your home to make it more resilient against future flood damage.

Bronze and Silver (direct)

On its website, Lloyds Bank offers two additional levels of home insurance: Bronze and Silver.

The former had below-average scores of 63% for buildings cover and 65% for contents cover. Silver scored 74% for both buildings and contents – above the averages of 71% and 67%, respectively.

Standard and Premier (on comparison websites)

For customers buying through comparison websites, Lloyds Bank offers two policies: Standard and Premier. Standard got 71% for both buildings and contents in our analysis – exactly average for buildings cover and a little above average for contents.

Premier, meanwhile, was in the top half of our table – with scores of 74% for buildings and 79% for contents. It ranked in the top five for contents.
