‘LV's Plus policy was let down by its buildings cover’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

The contents cover in LV’s Plus policy scored an impressive 75% and is in the top fifth of our table. However, its buildings policy lands in the bottom fifth with a score of just 59%.

It was potentially in the running for a Best Buy for its contents cover, but LV’s chances were scuppered by underwhelming customer feedback and a below-average claims acceptance rate.

The Plus policy’s benefits include equal levels of contents cover for items stored in outbuildings (such as a garage or shed) as those kept in the home, whereas many other insurers offer less for contents in outbuildings. It also includes £5m legal liability cover. With most policies, cover ranges from £1m to £2m.

We were less impressed by its compulsory excesses, which tended to be comparatively high – £350 for buildings and contents cover. It also didn’t have a definition of ‘storm’ in its policy wording, which would have given policyholders an idea of how well their policy might protect them against adverse weather.

Garden cover

Plus was a standout when it came to garden cover – with trees and plants covered for up to £10,000, and relandscaping costs up to the overall contents sum insured (which can be up to £150,000).

Damage and theft to garden furniture are also covered.

Essentials and Home policies

LV’s mid-range Home policy had a similar buildings score to Plus – 58%. Its contents score was an average 67%.

Its streamlined budget policy – Essentials – was decidedly below average on both counts in our analysis. It scored 56% for both buildings and contents (with the averages being 71% and 67%, respectively).
