A digital photo frame lets you keep hundreds, even thousands, of pictures in one place, cycling through them automatically. So rather than choosing a handful of favourites to print, you can have everything from holiday snaps to wedding photos popping up throughout the day.

How we test digital photo frames
We buy the bestselling digital photo frames and put them through our tough tests. We don't accept freebies from product manufacturers or retailers.
We regularly revisit the digital photo frames on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing and when we find them we do.
Picture quality, judged by our expert panel
Our photography experts assess the same set of images on every digital photo frame, looking at everything from sharpness and colour range to skin tones and reflections.
The differences can be striking. The best frames produce bright, crisp photos and keep reflections from getting in the way. The worst screens are surprisingly dim, with images lacking the clarity you’d expect from a device designed to show off your favourite photos.
Video and sound quality
Our video experts assess the quality of footage and sound. The best frames keep videos looking clear and smooth, while weaker models become blurry as soon as there’s movement. We also come across plenty of muffled and choppy audio.
In general, video never looks quite as good as still photos on these frames. And don’t expect one to replace your speakers any time soon – sound quality across most of the models is fairly underwhelming.
Ease of use
Getting photos onto your frame shouldn’t be a headache. We check how easy it is to upload files using the accompanying app, which is the main method encouraged by most manufacturers. Where other options are available, we try those too.
We also look at how straightforward each frame is to use every day, along with how physically stable it is. Nobody wants a photo frame that wobbles every time you touch it, or takes a tumble after the slightest knock.

How do digital photo frames work?
Once you’ve set up your digital photo frame, you can use wi-fi or an app to upload your photos onto it from your digital collection. Some frames let you use more traditional methods, such as USB transfer or memory cards. You can also invite friends and family to send photos by wi-fi straight to the frame, so new pictures can pop up without you having to do a thing.
Keep it plugged in and the slideshow will keep going. You can usually choose how long each photo stays on screen, adjust the brightness and change the order of the pictures.

Do you need wi-fi for a digital photo frame?
Not necessarily. Wi-fi is the easiest way to get photos onto most digital photo frames, but it’s unlikely to be your only option.
If you’d rather not rely on the internet, look for a frame with an SD card slot or a USB socket. These let you load photos directly onto the frame from a memory card or camera – handy if your wi-fi is patchy or you’re setting one up for someone who isn’t particularly tech-savvy.

Amazon Echo: can I use this as a digital photo frame?
If you already own an Amazon Echo, or want a device that can do more than just show photos, a smart display is worth considering.
We put the Amazon Echo Show 8 through our digital photo frame test, but we haven't included it in our results because fundamentally it's a different product.
We did assess the quality of its picture and sound, though, both of which were impressive. That said, if displaying photos is your priority, it still can’t match our Best Buy digital photo frame for picture quality.
Alternatively, have a rummage through the drawer where your old tech goes to retire. An unused tablet probably won't match the very best dedicated photo frames, but it could still be a perfectly decent alternative. You may want to tweak some of the settings, though – such as switching on Do Not Disturb to stop your family photos being interrupted by a stream of unwanted notifications.
