Your sofa should be an attractive, practical and comfortable addition to your living room.
That’s why we asked 4,451 Which? members to rate their sofas. Our unique survey put some of Britain's favourite brands to the test, including DFS, Ikea and John Lewis.
The results reveal the brands that make the longest-wearing and best quality sofas.
And that's not all – we also asked 3,519 Which? members and the general public to rate their sofa-buying experience. We used these rankings to identify the best sofa stores so you can shop with confidence.

Table notes: Customer score is a combined score based on customer ratings of satisfaction with their furniture and likelihood of recommending to a friend. Based on a survey of 4,451 Which? Connect members who bought a sofa within the past ten years, conducted in February 2026. Sample sizes as above.
Fewer than 20% of the owners of our top sofa brands reported seeing signs of damage or wear and tear – an impressive result, given that we surveyed people who had owned their sofa for up to 10 years.
For brands at the bottom of the table, more than 40% of owners reported their sofa showing signs of damage.
How long do sofas last?
Based on our survey of real sofa owners, we estimate that a sofa should last at least 10 years – provided you buy from the right brand.
That said, the brand isn't the only thing you should consider if you're on the lookout for a durable sofa. The right choice of fabric is essential, too.
When we analysed survey responses by material, rather than brand, we found that faux leather sofa owners were more likely to report that their sofa showed signs of damage. Faux leather consists of a sheet of plastic layered over fabric, so it's prone to cracking and peeling.

Where is the best place to buy a sofa?
We also asked customers about their experience of buying a couch from 10 popular shops, including the service they received and the range on offer.

Table notes: Customer score is a combined score based on customer ratings of satisfaction with their furniture and likelihood of recommending to a friend. Based on a survey conducted in September 2025 of 3,519 Which? Connect members and members of the public who bought a sofa within the past 10 years. Sample sizes: Argos (47), DFS (470), Furniture Village (219), HSL (44), Ikea (193), John Lewis (246), Next (106), Oak Furnitureland (94), SCS (162), Sofology (143).
Our best sofa stores score over 75%, with four and five star ratings across the board.
At the other end of the table, some stores scored less than 70% – and two stars for value for money.

Independent sofa brands and shops

As well as surveying people who bought sofas from large brands, we also spoke to people who shopped at independent companies. We averaged the scores to assess the typical service provided by these traders.
Note that these scores don't reflect the performance of any individual company – that's why we don't include them in our tables.
Overall, independent sofa brands (sample size: 530) were given a customer score of 87%. They were rated five stars on quality and durability, and four stars on comfort and quality.
These outstanding ratings are comparable to the very best brands in our survey.
Independent sofa shops (sample size: 695) did similarly well, earning a customer score of 85% and five stars across the board, with an exception of four stars for customer service.
Are sofa shop guarantees any good?
During our research, we noticed that sofa guarantees vary a lot across retailers – in terms of both duration and what they cover.
While some retailers offer 25-year guarantees for the whole sofa, others offer just two years, and only cover the frame.
However, you can disregard this latter type of guarantee. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you can claim compensation for any product that doesn't last a 'reasonable' length of time. What constitutes 'reasonable' length will vary depending on the sofa, but it's fair to say that an expensive sofa should last longer.
Sofa retailers cannot take away this right with their guarantees. So if a part of your sofa breaks after a year due to poor manufacturing, you are entitled to compensation, even if the guarantee was only for six months.
The retailer might have to fix or replace the sofa, or give you a refund (although they are allowed to deduct some money for the years you've already had it).
After six months, you will have to prove that the issue was caused by a fault with the manufacturing, and not user negligence.
Sofa guarantees are only worth note when they extend your consumer rights, such as a 25-year or even lifetime guarantee. This means you can claim at any time during that period.
For more information about guarantees and when you can use them, check out our guide to warranties and guarantees.
What should a good quality sofa cost?
You can pick up a three-seater sofa from some of our 10 top-rated brands for around £400.
However, these won't be the best quality sofas they have on offer. Expect to pay upwards of around £800 for a mid-range three-seater sofa.
Obviously a larger sofa will cost more, and the fabric you choose will also influence the price.
Leather sofas are significantly more expensive than fabric sofas. We don't recommend faux leather, as it wears out very quickly.
Pure wool and cotton are more expensive than blended fabrics, but blends and synthetics (apart from faux leather) perform just as well (if not better) than their natural counterparts.
Are high-end sofas worth it?
If you have the money, a sofa is a good investment, because you're likely to use it every day. The top-rated brands in our survey are more expensive, generally because they're better quality and last longer.
However, some cheaper brands also performed really well in our ratings. Although they didn't achieve the full five stars, Which? members were still very happy with their sofas, which stood up well to daily use.
Note that this wasn't the case for all the cheaper brands - meaning that it's important to do your research.
In short, you can get a great sofa from some budget-friendly brands, but you can get an outstanding sofa if you have more money to spend.

How we discover the best sofa brands and shops

Every two years, we ask our members to tell us about their sofa so we can find the top quality brands. Our most recent survey was conducted in February 2026 and received 4,451 respondents.
- We calculate our customer score based on customer ratings of satisfaction with their sofa and the likelihood of recommending to a friend. We use this to make an overarching rating for each brand.
- We also ask consumers to provide star ratings for specific elements such as quality, comfort and how well it has lasted.
In September 2025, we conducted a separate survey of 3,519 Which? members and members of the UK public. We asked about their buying experience and the shop they bought their sofa from, including how easily it was delivered and the quality of customer service they received.
Both surveys were run online and only included people who had bought a sofa in the past 10 years.
The final data has not been weighted and may not be representative of the target population.
