Best Epson printers

Epson has concentrated its consumer printers on inkjets. Unlike some rival printer brands, it doesn't focus as much on models with a low upfront price, so unsurprisingly we don't currently have any Epson Great Value models.

However, Epson more than makes up for this on printer quality. An exceptional 34% of Epson's printers we've tested have earned our Best Buy recommendation.

Although no Epson printers have yet been poor enough to be Don't Buys, some models have failed to impress in our tests.

So far, we haven't tested any Epson laser models as these are mainly aimed at businesses.

Epson printers compared: which range is best for you?

Epson EcoTank

Epson pioneered ink tank printers in the UK, back in 2014, and these printers are now the brand's main focus for consumer printing. Instead of buying new cartridges, you refill the black or colour tanks with the supplied bottles when required. They come with a claimed two years’ worth of ink in the box.

Although you might pay more than £300 to buy an Epson EcoTank printer, it should save you money in the long term. We've found several great EcoTank printers that cost very little to run, although not all of them impress for print quality – so make sure you check our Epson printer reviews before you buy.

Epson Expression

Epson’s biggest-selling range of inkjets is its Expression line, coming in Home, Photo and Premium varieties.

  • Home models are the lower and mid-range machines.
  • Photo printers are aimed at photography enthusiasts and have various features, such as memory card slots and PictBridge support. The 900-series Expression Photo printers can also print in A3 size.
  • The Premium range features popular printers such as the XP-630, XP-830 and XP-900. Despite the Premium name, not all printers in this line have premium prices.

Epson WorkForce

As the name suggests, Epson’s WorkForce range is aimed more at home office and business users. Alongside WorkForce inkjet printers, there are laser models in the range.

Although you can get reasonably priced WorkForce printers, they tend to be expensive to buy, particularly the WorkForce Pro models.

Epson Stylus

This range targets multiple audiences. Stylus Photo are photo printers, whereas Stylus Office are more geared towards productivity.

  • Any model with an X in the name means it's an all-in-one.
  • The F suffix means it can fax.
  • W denotes wi-fi.
  • D indicates that it can automatically print on both sides of the page.

Can I use other ink in my Epson printer?

Original-brand cartridges can be expensive, and many consumers would rather use third-party inks. But from our surveys, we know that many of you are worried about third-party cartridges not working in your printer.

Epson warns against using third-party inks in its printers but has said that it doesn't prevent you using them, either when you buy the printer or through firmware updates. Although it is known to present you with messages you have to clear when you install third-party ink (this isn't unique to Epson). That said, this shouldn't put you off using third-party ink.

Third-party ink brands consistently outperform original brands in our annual survey – customers are pleased with their good print quality and fantastic value for money.
