Which mattress brands do owners recommend?

We ask more than 3,597 Which? members and members of the public via an online panel about their mattresses to root out the most and least popular brands.

Our customer score is based on satisfaction with a mattress brand and the likelihood of recommending it to friends and family.

Our survey revealed a big difference in customer scores between the brands:

  • The three brand at the top of our table received an impressive Which? customer score of 81%. Two of them are new to our survey
  • Two brands on the bottom scored 73%
  • Only two brands achieved a solid four stars out of five for value for money
  • Eight brands received a disappointing two-star value for money rating

Which brand makes the most comfortable mattresses?

Which? mattress expert, Lisa Galliers

In our lab, we test body support, durability and pressure distribution, and independently assess how firm or soft a mattress feels, plus much more. But mattress comfort is harder to measure, because everyone's idea of comfort is subjective.

Lisa GalliersWhich? mattress expert

This is where our survey comes in. As well as asking Which? members and members of the general public to rate their mattress brand, we also ask them to report on how comfortable their mattress is.

Our unique survey results on this question are very revealing.

  • Only five out of 20 mattress brands in our survey received a full five-star rating for comfort.
  • The most common reason given for replacing a mattress was because it was uncomfortable (35%).
  • One of the top reasons why members purchased a new mattress is because it felt comfortable in the shop, and was made by a trusted brand.

Best online mattress shops

Most high street mattress retailers have an online presence, but there's also a booming industry of online brands including Emma, Eve and Simba.

These brands sell their own-brand 'bed-in-a-box' mattresses direct to consumers.

None of the online mattress shops did badly at all in our survey but there were were some differences that could turn your mattress-buying experience from mundane to marvellous.

Should you shop for a mattress online or in-store?

Buying a mattress

Our survey revealed that mattress owners are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 48% bought their mattress in-store, while 52% shopped online.

Visiting a store lets you try out mattress materials and different levels of firmness, so it's easier to figure out what works best for you.

Try to lie on mattresses in your normal sleep position for around 10 minutes — it's worth feeling slightly silly to guarantee a good night's sleep.

Around half of mattress buyers (53%) visited a store to try out a mattress before buying, while a third (29%) said they bought their mattress at least partly because it felt comfortable in the shop.

However, if you're unable to get to the shops easily, buying online can in some cases offer more flexibility — especially if something is wrong with the mattress.

Brands such as Emma, Eve and Simba, recognise that their online-only offer limits your ability to try before you buy, so offer trial periods where you can try the mattress out at home before deciding if it's right for you.

Some sleep trials can be as lengthy as up to 200 nights or even a full 365 days, to give you a better chance to test your mattress. During this time you can usually return the mattress for a refund or exchange – just make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully before buying. They're not all created equal.

Mattresses from popular brands reviewed in depth

If you're still undecided as to what brand to go for, our individual mattress reviews have more detail on some of the most popular brands:

How we research mattress brands and shops

In October 2025, we asked 3,597 Which? Connect panel members and members of the general public who had bought a mattress in the past five years to tell us about their experiences via an online survey. To work out customer scores for mattress brands, we asked what brand of mattress people owned, whether they were satisfied with it and whether they'd recommend it to friends or family.

We also asked how they'd rate mattress shops for quality of advice, range of mattresses, value for money and ease of arranging delivery.

If you're not yet a member, join Which? today to find out everything you need to know about buying the best mattress and secure a good night's sleep for years to come.
