Best under-counter fridges

Discover our Best Buy recommendations for under-counter fridges, based on our expert, independent testing.

Under-counter fridges are designed to slot under a worktop in your kitchen. They're useful if you're short on space and only need to store a relatively small amount of food. They can also come in handy for storing extra groceries.

The best models will keep your food chilled at a safe temperature around the clock, so it stays fresher for longer. The worst will leave you with lukewarm milk and spoiled vegetables.

Why you can trust our under-counter fridge reviews

Which? is the UK’s consumer champion: a not-for-profit organisation that's all about making life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone.

Despite being not-for-profit, we don't rely on free samples – we buy all the fridges we test, to make sure that our reviews are 100% independent.

We test all fridges in our test labs the same in-depth way, so our judgements aren't influenced by the price of an appliance or the brand.

As the Which? fridge expert, I work closely with our lab to make sure we're testing all of the latest popular fridges. We examine factors such as cooling speed, energy efficiency, how well the recommended thermostat setting works, how easy the fridge is to clean, and whether the crisper compartment keeps fruit and vegetables fresh.

Where to buy an under-counter fridge

  • Amazon sells under-counter fridges from brands such as Hisense and Russell Hobbs. However, it also sells lots of models from obscure brands that we can't vouch for. Check our reviews and choose a model that we've vetted.
  • AO sells a wide range of brands, including Candy, Fridgemaster, Hisense and Indesit. It will also remove your old model for an extra fee.
  • Boots Electricals is another good place to look for under-counter fridges, and you can earn Boots advantage card points if you're a card holder.
  • Currys sells a good range of under-counter fridges, with the option to pay in instalments if you need to. It often has bundle deals for fridges and freezers. You can add on installation, door reversal and recycling of your old appliance (at additional cost).

Best under-counter fridge features to look for

Open under-counter fridge

Whatever brand you choose, consider the following:

Capacity

The actual space inside under-counter fridges can also vary significantly. On average, you'll get about 90 litres of usable storage space. However, we've tested some models with only around 60 litres of usable space, and others with more than 110 litres.

Our reviews reveal the actual usable storage space inside each model. This may be lower than the figure provided by the manufacturer, as some manufacturers measure with the drawers and shelves taken out.

Icebox

Some under-counter fridges have a small freezer compartment at the top, which could be useful you don’t have the space for a freezer. Some will only allow you to store ice and ready-frozen food, such as frozen peas or ice cream, while others are powerful enough to freeze fresh food down to safe temperatures.

Use the icebox filter on our under-counter fridge reviews to find those we've tested that have an icebox.

Crisper drawer

To save space, some models have a sunken crisper drawer and a shelf over the top. This can make it tricky to use, as you need to move everything off the shelf above before you can access food in the drawer. We'd recommend choosing an under-counter model with a crisper drawer that pulls out.

Colour

Freestanding under-counter fridges tend to come in white, silver, or black. If you'd rather have your fridge blend seamlessly into your kitchen decor, consider an integrated model.

Are under-counter fridges a standard size?

Most under-counter fridges are 85cm high or less and fit under standard-height kitchen counters.

Occasionally we find models that are taller than 85cm, and these don't fit. We highlight this in our reviews when we find them. Models currently on sale that we know to be a little taller are the Bush ME4785UCL and the Bosch KIR21NSE0G. Check your measurements carefully before buying.

Width and depth can vary between models, too. You can compare the height, width and depth measurements of each model we've tested to make sure your chosen fridge will fit neatly under your worktop.

If you're looking for a fridge to sit on top of your kitchen counter, then it would be better to opt for a tabletop fridge. We don't currently test these as they're much less popular.

How much do I need to pay for an under-counter fridge?

Most cost between £100 and £500. However, some can cost more than £700.

Luckily, we've found some models that are both powerful and efficient, and won't cost you more than £200. Head to our under-counter fridge reviews and filter by Great Value to see them.
