How we reviewed wine clubs

Our wine club reviews and recommendations are based on an online survey of wine club users to get insights from real customers on which brands are getting it right and why.

In October 2024, we quizzed 1,389 members of the Which? Connect survey panel who'd used wine clubs about their experiences.

We asked respondents to rate their experience with wine clubs they had been members of, telling us what they liked and disliked. We asked them to rate a range of factors: customer service, communication from the company, quality of wines, range of wines, ease of use of the website/app, customisation, additional information and value for money.

The overall customer score for each wine club is based on customer satisfaction and how likely customer were to recommend the company to others.

To be a Which? Recommended Provider, a wine club needed to rank in the top ratings banding of providers (confirmed by our statistical analysis team), be rated three stars or above in all categories and have confirmation in its T&Cs that members can easily cancel their subscriptions if they want to.

To give a company a rating, we needed a minimum of 30 responses in our survey. This is to ensure it's statistically robust.

Why you can trust us: at Which? we're free from manufacturer and retailer influence. Find out more about our impartiality and how your support helps us to stay editorially independent

Which wine club is cheapest?

Since most wine clubs have multiple tiers of pricing that can be customised and improved with additional offers, there’s not one that will provide significantly cheaper wine on average than the rest. Most major clubs will have wines available for the kind of prices you’d be likely to pay in any supermarket.

But while the price of wines in your local supermarket will typically range between £5 and £25, wine clubs will also give you access to bottles that cater for any budget, including wines that cost £60 or more per bottle.

If you're after bargains, it can often pay to try a few different clubs and take advantage of their introductory offers. Offers of £30 or £40 off your first box are easy to find. Some also include free delivery, wine glasses or accessories such as decanters.

But don't get too blinded by these deals. It's also worth thinking about what's most important to you and which club offers the flexibility and range you're after.

Why join a wine club?

As well as a convenient way to get wine delivered to your doorstep, joining a wine club could also help you discover styles of wine you might not otherwise consider trying, helping to expand your horizons with expert-led recommendations. They can also make a nice gift for the wine-curious person in your life.

Most wine clubs will give you more than just a sporadic case of wine to your home. You'll usually get a decent amount of insight into the wines, and tasting events (virtual and in-person) are regular features of several services.

How to get the best from a wine club

  • Shop around. With plenty of introductory offers available and the ability to cancel whenever you wish, it’s worth sampling different club selections until you find one you’re happy to stick with. Clubs with no joining fee are likely a better place to start if you’re unsure.
  • If you want to improve your hosting prowess, make the most of the club’s tasting events. Seasonal food and wine pairing sessions are a regular feature.
  • Check wine prices by using a price-finding app such as Wine-Searcher or Vivino to see how good a deal you’re getting.
  • Check delivery charges. If you’re wanting regular delivery from your subscription, it’s worth knowing how much you need to spend (if anything) to get it sent for free.
  • Expect to pay a bit more for wines from wine clubs versus the supermarket. They provide tasting notes and information, and may organise tastings and additional benefits for members, free or not. It's up to you to decide whether these benefits are worth the extra cost of the wines.

Other ways to order wine online

You can order wine online from most major supermarkets as well as specialists such as Majestic.

At Waitrose Cellar you can buy pre-selected mixed cases that have been chosen by a wine expert, as a sort of wine club.
