Best Buy food and drink - discover top-rated supermarket picks from our independent taste tests

Is it worth getting a veg box?

Customers gave several reasons for having a fruit and veg box delivered, with many citing the direct support it provides to producers - 'They are farmers, not just distributors', one Riverford customer told us.

Several Oddbox customers told us they appreciated the company rescuing food that could otherwise end up in landfill because of over-production or because of its odd shape. You tend to find out in advance what your weekly box will contain and can generally substitute a specified number of items - one customer told us: 'I can swap choices before delivery'.

Not only that, but some providers, including The Cotswold Veg Company, also let you 'build your own' box so that it's truly bespoke.

When it comes to subscription services, you can also pause or cancel deliveries if you're on holiday or want a break, or to amend an upcoming delivery. How much notice is needed for this varies, as does the method of doing so. Some require you to email, while others allow you to do this on your online account dashboard. Check with the individual provider to ensure this suits your needs.

For example, Marvellous Greens and Beans says you can 'skip, pause or cancel' your subscription delivery at any time. In contrast, Greendale's T&Cs say that amending an order can be done by contacting the company at least three days before the delivery date, while cancelling an order must be at least 48 hours prior and in writing.

Ordering as you go was something one customer appreciated because it enabled them to 'order as and when'.

We compare fruit and veg boxes with a supermarket basket to find the cost differences

shopping supermarket basket

When we compared the cost of buying a fruit and veg box from two of the largest companies – Riverford and Abel & Cole – against buying the equivalent produce at a supermarket, in August 2025, we found that veg boxes typically come out more expensive, with Abel & Cole almost one-third more costly than buying the equivalent organic fruit and veg online at Tesco.

One obvious benefit is that while these providers deliver straight to your door, the other requires you to go to the supermarket (although there's the option of a supermarket home delivery, but often at an extra cost).

In both cases, we looked at comparable organic versions of the supermarket fruit and veg.

Riverford costs vs the supermarket (Waitrose)

  • Small weekly box from Riverford - £17.95 including delivery
  • Similar items price-checked at Waitrose - £16.24

Riverford Box = £1.71 more expensive

Abel & Cole costs vs the supermarket (Tesco)

  • Small weekly mixed box from Abel & Cole, plus £3.50 delivery - £22.25
  • Similar items price-checked at Tesco - £14.95

Abel & Cole box = £7.30 more expensive

Both calculated on 18 August 2025. Waitrose online shop of organic vegetables compared with a Riverford box for delivery 27 August 2025. Abel & Cole box for delivery on 26 August compared with Tesco online.

How to choose the best fruit and veg box for you

A fruit and veg box being delivered

Before you sign up with a veg box provider, consider the following:

Check whether the company delivers to your area, and when. Some may deliver in your area only on certain days, or not at all. Some also have a policy of delivering at night (for example, Oddbox) or leaving the delivery with neighbours if you're not in, so consider whether this suits you or is likely to be an inconvenience.

Think about your priorities: If organic is key, then The Organic Delivery Company is worth looking at, while sustainability preferences might be better served at Wonky Veg or Oddbox.

Think about how regularly you want a delivery. Some provide one-off orders - including Milk & More - but many have both ad-hoc and subscription services as an option. Those that do offer subscriptions vary in frequency, from weekly to every eight weeks.

Consider whether you want extras beyond fruit and veg. Some companies provide a wide range of extras, including cleaning and household products, as well as gifts, whereas others have a more limited offering.

The bottom line? If you have a fussy eater in your household or don't like certain foods, then a fruit and veg box might not be for you.

If you're keen to try fruit and veg delivery, you can look out for introductory offers and give one a go.

How we tested fruit and veg boxes

The results are based on an online survey of 1,277 people (general public and Which? Connect panel) in June 2025 about their fruit and veg box subscriptions.

We asked them to rate the company and its boxes on aspects including customer service, value for money, range and quality of food, quantity of produce in the box, ease of placing orders, flexibility when adjusting orders and pausing subscriptions and the delivery service. Customers were also asked to rate availability of organic options and the seasonality of boxes.

The customer score is based on satisfaction and likelihood to recommend the company to others.

To give a company a rating, we needed a minimum of 30 responses in our survey. Sample sizes for each company are in brackets in the table.

*Supermarkets chosen respectively because they had the most closely comparable produce. When an exact product match wasn't available in supermarkets, we chose the nearest equivalent. Costs measured using price per kg where applicable. Where this was not possible, closest reasonable estimation was used. Fruit and veg box prices based on the next upcoming delivery at time of writing (18 August 2025).
