Oil filled radiators might not be quite as popular as other heater types, but the best oil filled radiators can still pack an impressive heating punch.

They look like (and sometimes weigh as much as) a classic radiator. They heat a reservoir of oil, which gives out heat at a more gradual but longer-lasting rate.

You can also get oil-free models, which work in the same way but use a different material to act as the reservoir.

We've tested more than 40 electric heaters over the past three years, including small oil filled radiators and large ones from DeLonghi, Dimplex and more.

We've found one oil filled radiator that is a cut above the rest, giving it our Best Buy recommendation.

Why you can trust us to reveal the very best oil filled radiators: Which? is a not for profit organisation and has been testing products and calling out rogue businesses for almost 70 years.

In an increasingly chaotic world, filled with so-called 'experts', it's good to know that brands still can't buy their way onto our testing or influence what we write. We buy every product we test and we'll tell you the worst as well as the best oil filled radiators.

Cost per hour is based on using the heater on its highest setting as, following our testing, we think this is the setting you're more likely to use. Calculated using the unit price under the current energy price cap (24.86p/kwh).

Heating performance based on how quickly the heater raised the temperature of the room in half an hour, and how evenly it heated the room.

Do oil filled heaters use a lot of electricity?

Oil-filled heater

Like electric heaters, the more energy an oil filled one uses, the faster it heats up the room.

While we all want to save pennies, our tests find time and time again that if you want fast heating it'll simply cost more to run.

Typically, we've found oil filled heaters heat up our test room slower than fan and convector heaters, but they cost less to run: 32p per hour on average compared to 58p per hour for fan heaters, and 46p per hour for convector heaters on average.

But oil filled heaters have the advantage of continuing to put heat out after you've turned them off, allowing you to keep getting a bit of warmth without using more electricity.

In our tests we found the temperature will increase much slower when you turn it off, but the reservoir of oil is still hot.

We typically got about half an hour more of heating before the temperature started to drop again (albeit slowly).
