Brewers

Brewers stands out for its products – both the range it offers and the quality. It also gets top marks from shoppers for its customer service, too.

One shopper said Brewers has 'experienced and knowledgeable staff' with a 'large range of quality products'. Another pleased customer said the 'knowledge of staff is fantastic, both in terms of products, what to use for what project, how much you will need, how to buy efficiently. In every aspect, my experience with my local Brewers staff is just invaluable'.

Some mentioned the free parking as a plus, while others said that Brewers has a good selection of speciality paints that aren't widely available elsewhere.

Last year, we marked Brewers as a WRP. While it continues to impress across most metrics we asked about, customers awarded it just two stars for value for money. This ruled it out from being a WRP this year.

Screwfix

Shoppers love joint top-of-the-table Screwfix for its fantastic customer service, both when buying and if something goes wrong. Impressively, 98% of respondents said they would recommend it as a place to buy DIY and decorating products – the highest of any brand.

Customers also highly rate its product range, product quality, and value for money. One respondent told us: 'Screwfix offers competitive prices for specialist tools and building materials/products. I have bought 2x Makita battery drill drivers over recent years, and the buying process has been easy both online and in-store. The product range and quality are good, and staff are able to offer advice when requested.'

Several respondents praised the click and collect system, with one saying 'their click and collect services works very quickly and effectively'.

Screwfix's returns policies passed our behind-the-scenes checks with flying colours, and it impressed across the board in our survey, so it’s a WRP.

Johnstone's Decorating Centre

Johnstone's Decorating Centre is also highly commended by shoppers – 96% would recommend it – who rate its product quality and customer service highly. It's also a WRP.

It stocks professional trade paint brands, including its own range, at 200 decorating centres across the UK. And shoppers love the quality of the paint it sells, with one telling us that 'it sells professional grade products that make a job much easier'. Another said that they don't go anywhere else to buy paint thanks to the 'excellent quality'.

It got top marks for customer service, too. One respondent said: 'Where they had more than one brand of the item needed, the member of staff was very knowledgeable on which was the best brand for my particular DIY project.'

John Lewis

Once again, department store John Lewis was the standout choice, getting top marks from shoppers for the quality of its products, range and availability of stock, as well as for customer service. We’ve named it a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP).

It impresses across the board, with five stars in every metric apart from value for money. Here it gets an admirable four stars, with one shopper telling us that it offers 'good value own-label' products. The retailer reintroduced its 'never knowingly undersold' price promise in 2024, meaning it matches the prices of 25 leading retailers even during offers. If you find the same item for a lower price within seven days of buying it, John Lewis also promises to refund the difference.

Several people told us they liked being able to try out the mattresses in store, and others praised the quality of the bedding and cookware. One respondent said: 'This was the first time I shopped at John Lewis online. A really great service and experience – top-quality products at a good price. Cannot fault them at all. Plus, the items I ordered – cushions and pillows – came with a guarantee and warranty which I'd never heard of before for this sort of item.'

Lakeland

The products at Lakeland are excellent. Shoppers gave it top marks for the quality of what it sells, the range of items and how well stocked they are. Its customer service gets five out of five stars, too. One shopper told us that the 'whole experience was top notch. Customer services are the best I have dealt with.'

The Lakeland Guarantee means that you can return the vast majority of products for a refund or replacement for up to three years with proof of purchase, so it's no wonder that it also gets top marks for aftersales service and returns.

It passed our retailer terms and conditions check with flying colours, meaning it's a WRP again this year.

ProCook

Cookware specialist ProCook is another great choice for homeware. Shoppers told us they love the range of products and the superb customer service. One said of the retailer: 'Well-laid-out store, lots of interesting items I had not seen elsewhere, staff very helpful.' Another told us that 'the range of products, customer service and quality of goods are all excellent.'

It got four stars for value. One customer told us that they have an outlet store near them, which helps with the cost of items.

It's got excellent returns policies and is a good all-rounder, so we've also made it a WRP.

Other highly rated furniture retailers

There were four retailers in our survey that got a customer score of 80%, but we didn't make them WRPs.

  • DFS impressed with the product range and availability, but we were missing star ratings on four metrics – including customer service – due to a low number of responses.
  • Dreams shoppers love the customer service and product range, but rated it three stars on value for money.
  • Ikea got four or five stars on most metrics that we asked about, but customer service was rated as three stars. We also have concerns that the terms and conditions on Ikea's website could lead consumers to think they have fewer rights than they do.
  • M&S impresses across the board with four or five stars for everything we asked about, but we're concerned that the terms and conditions on the M&S website could lead consumers to think they have fewer rights than they do.

You can find out more about your shopping rights, including for returns and faulty goods, via our consumer rights guides.

How we choose Which? Recommended Providers

Every year, we survey thousands of Which? members and members of the public about their experiences of shopping with some of the UK's best-known stores and websites, as well as with lesser-known brands.

Our star ratings reveal how customers rated each retailer on a range of different measures from value for money to aftersales service.

We also name Which? Recommended Providers (WRP) for each category. Only shops with top customer scores, four out of five stars for customer service and delivery, and three stars for value for money can make the grade. WRPs also need to offer at least 28 days to return non-faulty goods. We exclude any retailers that give misleading or unclear information about returns.
