Which? responds to Ofcom's expectations of mobile providers for 2G and 3G switch-off

1 min read

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:

"It's positive that Ofcom has set out exactly what it expects of mobile providers during the 2G and 3G switch off but much more needs to be done to make consumers aware of the switch off, especially of 3G, which has already started.

"The switch off may be problematic for those in rural areas with poor 4G or 5G coverage or customers using older mobile devices and services, which rely on these networks. Those with older handsets will need to upgrade the device to one that supports 4G, or buy a SIM for a network that still supports 3G when it's cut off by their current provider. O2 will be the only provider still offering 3G services by 2025.

"Mobile operators must support consumers through the switch off. In particular, they should help vulnerable customers find the best option for them in the switch off - as they may have older handsets or be unable to afford an upgrade to a 4G or 5G capable device."
