Lived Inflation Estimates

The ONS inflation estimates are based on an average consumer, but we know that consumers spend different proportions of their income on different products and therefore have different lived experiences of price increases.
We estimate ‘lived’ inflation rates for different types of households by weighting price increases by how much a household typically spends on a product. Full details of the methodology can be found here. The estimated lived inflation rates and price indices for income quintiles and household compositions are shown below.
