9 October – Spy Dog children's books removed from schools over link to adult content

Spy Pups series

Update: Puffin said the website has now been suspended but is continuing to recommend following the guidance about removing books from shelves, while a permanent solution is reached.

A series of children's books is being removed from schools and libraries after a web address printed on the back cover was found to link to inappropriate adult content.

Some editions of the Spy Dog, Spy Cat and Spy Pups display a link on the back cover to the author Andrew Cope's former website.

Publisher Puffin Books said an unconnected third party had recently taken control of the domain name and is using it to display a different website with inappropriate adult content.

As a result, the publisher has paused sale and distribution of the books.

In a statement, Puffin said: 'This website is not associated with Puffin or Andrew Cope. We are asking people not to visit the website and ensure that children do not visit it either.

'We are taking this extremely seriously and are acting on this issue as a matter of urgency through the appropriate channels to get this website removed.

'This is an in-depth and complex legal process and will take time.  In addition, we have immediately paused on the sale and distribution of the books whilst we deal with this matter.

'We are currently working with retail and education and library partners to remove the books from shelves for the time being.

'We are asking anyone who has copies of these titles to temporarily remove these books from their shelves.'

11 August – Warning over dangerous counterfeits of trending Labubu toys

Fake labubu

Parents have been warned about dangerous counterfeits of a trending toy that could pose a choking hazard for children.

Labubus are plush toys which have become a global sensation, sparking queues at toy shops and sold out stock. For more details on how to source a genuine toy, see our piece on where can you buy Labubu toys?

However, trading standards teams across the country, including Northumberland, West Lothian, Aberdeen and Rhondda, say rogue traders are now cashing in on the popularity of the toys, selling poorly-made fakes with small parts which can easily detach.

Hull City Council’s Trading Standards team has seized hundreds of the toys from a number of shops around the city and warned many more will probably still be on sale.

The dolls can be identified by a series of features that set them apart from the real thing, including:

  • Packaging: Real Labubu boxes have a matt finish and muted colours, while fakes are often glossy and overly vibrant. Look for a POP MART sticker and a QR code.
  • Teeth: Authentic Labubus have nine triangular teeth, resembling fangs. Fakes might have more or fewer teeth and may be less defined.
  • Mouth and expression: The shape and size of the mouth along with the overall expression can differ between real and fake Labubus. Authentic ones have a mischievous expression.
  • Quality: Real Labubus generally have higher quality fur, a well-blended blush on their cheeks applied by airbrush and embedded glossy eyes. Fakes might have uneven fur, odd colours, or wobbly limbs.
  • Foot detail: Newer Labubu editions have a UV-detectable seal on the right foot. Under UV light, you should see a silhouette of the specific Labubu model.

Rachel Stephenson, the council's head of public protection, said: 'These fakes can seem appealing. They might be cheaper or more easily available than the real thing, which can be tempting when children are desperate to get their hands on one. However, it is simply not worth the risk.

'These counterfeit toys are poorly made and haven’t been subject to the same standards and checks as the real thing. They can easily come apart, posing a serious choking hazard for small children.'

She said she would urge all parents to check products carefully and only purchase the toys if they are sure they are genuine.

Safety tips for baby and children’s products

Our investigations have uncovered serious risks with some children’s items sold online.

In 2021, we bought 28 toys from AliExpress, Amazon Marketplace, eBay and Wish and found that 12 – or more than 40% of those tested – failed standard safety tests and would be dangerous for children to play with. Some toys failed safety tests multiple times for different hazards.

Check for appropriate safety standards. Any product designed for babies or children can adhere to a specific standard and have a CE/UKCA mark that indicates the product has met EU health, safety and environmental concerns. You may also see the Lion Mark on toys, which indicates toy safety and is used by the British Toy and Hobby Association and Toy Retailers Association.
