Revealed: The latest Which? energy company rankings

After a frustrating few years, fixed energy deals have finally returned. A cheaper energy tariff may be a solid motive to switch to another energy firm - but we strongly recommend that you also check its customer service.
The energy deals currently on the market aren't as tempting as those we've seen in the past. A typical household might save £100-£200 a year, rather than thousands. And many fixed deals from different providers offer very similar rates. That means that choosing a firm based on its customer service record, or switching away from one that's frustrating you, might be more appealing.
Every year, we survey thousands of energy customers and conduct an in-depth, behind-the-scenes assessment of energy firms' practices to reveal the best – and the ones to avoid.
We’ve deemed three energy providers worthy of being named Which? Recommended Providers for 2025. They are:
- Octopus Energy
- Utility Warehouse
- 100Green
All three firms were highly rated by their customers and scored well enough overall in our behind-the-scenes assessment, which looked at how easy of contact, handling complaints, supporting customers who need it, smart meter targets and switching.
While we saw a few providers upping their game this year, at the same time, we saw many firms falling short when it came to providing the level of customer service we consider acceptable.

Octopus Energy, Utility Warehouse and 100Green are Which? Recommended Providers for 2025
This year, three providers met the criteria to be awarded the Which? Recommended Provider status. Octopus Energy, Utility Warehouse and 100Green did well enough in our research that combines both customer opinion and expert analysis.
We surveyed 11,984 energy customers in September-October 2024 and asked them to rate six areas of service, how satisfied they are with their supplier and how likely they are to recommend it. We also looked at 18 energy firms' practices and policies based on information we requested from them and our own research in September-November 2024.
To become a Which? Recommended Provider for energy, a company must:
- Get a customer score of 70% or higher based on our survey of almost 12,000 energy customers
- Get at least three stars out of a possible five in each of our customer survey result categories
- Score above average in our behind-the-scenes assessment of 17 criteria, including ease of contacting, handling complaints, support for those who need it, performance against smart meeting targets and how they handle the switching process.

Energy companies with poor results
Ovo Energy, So Energy and British Gas received the lowest scores when we combined the results of the customer survey and our behind-the-scenes assessment of their practices.
Ovo Energy and British Gas are two of the largest energy providers in the UK, but both received mediocre customer feedback in the survey.
Neither company scored well in our behind-the-scenes assessment either, particularly when it came to handling customer complaints.
Except for Octopus Energy, none of the big firms fared particularly well in our customer survey. There was little to separate British Gas, Scottish Power, Ovo Energy, EDF Energy and E.ON Next when it came to customer scores.
All five providers received only two stars when it came to providing value for money, according to customers, and none received more than three stars in any of the customer survey categories.

Switching energy provider
Now that it is possible to save money on certain fixed tariffs again, it's worth shopping around for a deal that might suit you, especially if you're experiencing substandard customer service. We've seen a number of tariffs on the market with rates cheaper than the current energy price cap.
When it comes to fixing an energy deal, the best option will depend on your circumstances. It’s advisable to weigh the pros and cons of any tariff deal.
Compare what your monthly payments would be on a fixed deal with what you'd expect them to be if you stick with the price-capped variable tariff to see what the best option is for you. We would recommend looking for deals cheaper than the price cap, not longer than 12 months and without significant exit fees - in case you want to get out earlier than you contract length should things change.

While a good price is a crucial aspect in picking an energy tariff, with many fixed deals hovering around a similar price point, it’s also important to consider the customer service of the firm you’re switching to and how quickly and efficiently they’ll be able to resolve any issues.
