Product recall: Fitbit Ionic smartwatch battery poses 'burn hazard'
A safety warning issued by the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) has identified a smartwatch with a battery that 'can overheat, posing a burn hazard'.

Which Fitbit products are being recalled?
The OPSS has issued a product recall warning for the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch (shown below), which states that the battery can overheat, posing a burn hazard. The smartwatch is made in Taiwan and China and has a colour LCD screen with three buttons on the side.
If you're not sure which Fitbit model you have, check the back of your device. If you have an Ionic, you'll see the mode number 'FB503' under the CE mark and above the strap clasp.
Fitbit states that the recall does not affect any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers.
What does Fitbit say?
A statement on the Fitbit's website reads:
'We announced a voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic smartwatches, which the company introduced in 2017 and stopped producing in 2020. The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard.
'The health and safety of Fitbit users is our highest priority. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution for our users. We will offer a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.
'This recall is specific to Fitbit Ionic devices. It does not impact any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers.
'If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device.'
What should I do if I'm affected?
If you own a Fitbit Ionic smartwatch, you should stop using it immediately.
You can claim a full refund for your device through Fitbit's online refund centre. Fitbit says it will also offering a 'special discount' on a selection of other devices and bands to those affected, but no further details on this are available at present.
