2. Earn cash by switching banks

The introduction of the Current Account Switch Service has made it easier than ever to change bank accounts, as banks now do much of the work for you.

Some banks will pay you cash or vouchers worth up to £175to switch your current account.

Switching accounts could also give you access to cashback, exclusive savings accounts and cheap overdrafts, not to mention better customer service.

3. Use cashback websites every time you shop

You can make money buying products you already had your eye on by going through cashback sites such as Quidco and TopCashback.

Both offer internet browser extensions which will alert you when cashback is available from a retailer's website.

Many credit cards offer cashback or rewards (such as airmiles or shopping vouchers), which can be used alongside cashback websites.

4. Reclaim lost cash

Hundreds of millions of pounds are lying around in lost or forgotten bank accounts, savings accounts and even old investments.

Marks & Spencer runs a similar scheme called 'Shwopping' and there are two ways you can benefit. You can fill up a bag with any old clothes and textiles, drop it off at an M&S store, and pick up 50 points on your Sparks loyalty card.

Alternatively, you can take your donation - which must include a piece of M&S clothing - to Oxfam and get a £5 M&S voucher, which you can use when you spend at least £35 on clothing, home and beauty products.

18. Recycle your old technology

Sites including Envirophone and Mazuma Mobile offer an instant quote for smartphones - even if they're damaged.

But don't stop there. Mazuma Mobile and MusicMagpie will pay you for other old gadgets including tablets, Kindles and smartwatches.

Just make sure you clear the memory of your old gadget before handing it over.
